Meet "Aeonic"

In just over a decade, Balsam Range has collected armfuls of industry awards, held multiple months at the top of radio charts, recorded and performed with the Atlanta Pops Orchestra, and headlined an array of eclectic music festivals, all the while maintaining their identity and refining their craft to become one of the most vital artists in the roots genre.

On the heels of their second International Bluegrass Music AssociationEntertainer of the Year award, this eminent band continues to be a tour de force in Bluegrass with their album, Aeonic, to be released January 4, 2019from Mountain Home Music Company. The album is now available for pre-order HEREand available for radio play throughAirPlay Direct HERE.

With this music, Balsam Range continues to grow the magic that has mesmerized audiences and expanded their fandom — arresting songs full of humanity, dynamic performances graced with subtleties, and material that is both personal and profound. Music that would be powerful in any genre but is made all the more compelling through this Western North Carolina band’s acoustic music mastery.

The album kicks off with a song that has already spent weeks at the #1 spot in Bluegrass Radio, “The Girl Who Invented the Wheel.” With the lead vocal by Buddy Melton, 2-time IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year, it’s an out-of-the-box anecdote about a man left impressed albeit rejected by an independent woman: “I’ve been left before, this was a different deal / I think I just met the girl who invented the wheel.”

Several of the songs share a prevailing theme of searching for meaning. They may reveal where Balsam Range finds itself as an artist, evaluating the past, looking toward what’s next. “Tumbleweed Town” with lead vocal delivered by guitarist Caleb Smith, is a mid-tempo stroll through a town that lives inside a mind tortured with regret. “The Rambler,” with vocal rendered by mandolin player Darren Nicholson, is a dirge into the dark night of the soul, a story about life on the road and the road of life.

“Get Me Gone,” the most recent single from Aeonic, continues this theme of looking back, moving forward. It’s a catchy version of an otherwise sad story of love lost and soon to be forgotten. “Gone like whiskey gone like broke / Straight outta here like wind blown smoke / Won’t you give me some light good Lord, and get me gone.”

“Hobo Blues” showcases instrumental minimalism in order to pull you into the sadness of the character. A Ray LaMontagne cover with lead vocal by Smith, it creates a quiet interval on the album that adds to its thoughtful effect.

“Help Me To Hold On” is a song about desperation, and it’s performed that way, with an arrangement that portrays a profound sincerity. Melton’s vocal range and controlled power result in a performance that highlights a singer at the top of his game and illustrates why he has been awarded as such.

“Let My Life Be a Light” harkens back to the foundation of this band. Driving traditional Bluegrass Gospel powered by the band’s most seasoned and awarded performer, Grammy-winning banjoist,  Dr. Marc PruettPruett’s perfect timing and syncopation here showcase why he has been so celebrated, performing with greats like Ricky Skaggs before bringing his prowess to Balsam Range. With lead singing from Smith, the chorus sounds off the rich 3-part harmonies of him, Melton, and Tim Surrett.

“My Cross to Bear” is a murder ballad, purposefully written from an ambiguous first-person perspective who is constantly tortured with the guilt of their crime.

“Graveyard Blues” continues on dark themes common to Bluegrass storytelling, illustrating the harshness of life in another era where hard labor, tragedy and death were commonplace.

“Angel Too Soon” challenges listeners’ hearts. A hauntingly beautiful performance matched with an equally haunting lyric about the death of a child, it is the hardest of subjects and surely meant to be cathartic.

Bookending the collection of songs on this album with uniqueness, Balsam Rangeshows yet another dimension of their talent with a cover of The Beatles’ “If I Needed Someone.” With lead vocal by IBMA Bass Player of the Year Tim Surrett, the song features Beatles-styled stacked harmonies, along with impeccable timing and instrumental wizardry, that are unlike any arrangement the band — or arguably anyone in Bluegrass — has attempted. The result is a look at how adept Balsam Range is at merging genres. Both styles become enriched by the influence of the other.

It has been said that great songs are timeless. But they also organize time into attractive human pieces while their lyrics manage their way into our hearts and minds with lasting meaning. Great music has no expiration date—it is Aeonic.

New music and a new video!

We've been busy in the studio this spring when we weren't on the road visiting with y'all, and are ready to share a new song with you! Some of you may have heard it live, we've been playing it out for a few months now.

Howdy folks! We've been busy in the studio this spring when we weren't on the road visiting with y'all, and are ready to share a new song with you! Some of you may have heard it live, we've been playing it out for a few months now.

‘The Girl Who Invented The Wheel’ is a clever twist of a common song subject in any genre.  Lost love, relationship struggles and breakups. The characters in this tale could be anyone but as a listener you quickly develop an understanding that she is a master in the art of deception and heartbreak. A great songwriter and song can pull listeners into the story to the point they feel they are living it. Adam Wright is equally as masterful in creating such engaging lyrics as the characters he has created seem to be.”-Buddy

The single is available in all digital platforms HERE

We had a blast shooting a really fun video for the song! You can watch it HERE

As always,  your support and friendship means everything.

New Music!

So excited y'all! We will soon bring our latest project with Atlanta Pops Orchestra Ensemble, “Mountain Overture,” to the stage at MerleFest, one of the country’s premier music festivals, in Wilkesboro, North Carolina.

So excited y'all! We will soon bring our latest project with Atlanta Pops Orchestra Ensemble“Mountain Overture,” to the stage at MerleFest, one of the country’s premier music festivals, in Wilkesboro, North Carolina.

We think MerleFest a fitting place for us and the Atlanta Pops Orchestra Ensemble to showcase  “Mountain Overture” collaboration in a live setting. We sure hope you'll join us

“Mountain Overture,” from Mountain Home Music Company, takes the band’s most-loved songs and elevates them, pulling together the rustic and symphonic for a profound effect. The music scores, arranged by Wes Funderburk and Shelley Washington lift the heartfelt tale of “Trains I Missed” (IBMA 2011 Song of the Year), intensify the sentimental longing of “Blue Mountain,” and draw out the melancholia of “I Hear the Mountains.”

Balsam Range and Atlanta Pops Orchestra Ensemble will perform  Friday, April 27 — the day “Mountain Overture” is released — on the Watson Stage. Fans can get a preview of what they will hear on Thursday, April 26 when “Mountain Overture” streams at The Bluegrass Situation ->HERE

Find more information about the festival HERE and pre-order “Mountain Overture”HERE.

The Atlanta Pops Orchestra Ensemble is a 14-piece version of the typically 36-piece Atlanta Pops Orchestra. This condensed ensemble was established during the 70th anniversary season of the Atlanta Pops Orchestra in 2015, in order to take advantage of new opportunities for the Atlanta Pops to perform in situations that are more conducive to a smaller group of musicians. These have included collaborative performances with Zac Brown Band's founding member John Driskell Hopkins at nightclubs, restaurants and churches, with the Joe Gransden Big Band at the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center 2017 Holiday Gala in Atlanta, GA and with Balsam Range at the 2016 & 2017 Art of Music Festivals in Lake Junaluska, NC. The Atlanta Pops Orchestra Ensemble is comprised of string, woodwind, brass and rhythm section musicians from the Atlanta Pops Orchestra.

Can't wait to see everyone on the road this summer! Check out our tour dates!!

Balsam Range 10 Year Anniversary Celebration!

On Saturday, March 4 we gathered at the Colonial Theatre in Canton, NC to celebrate our tenth year of playing music together...our bandiversary! What a night it was. We did songs from each of our six albums, what we could remember anyway! It was so gratifying to see so many people in the crowd  that have been with us the entire ten years. Family and friends that mean so much to us. Also, new friends that have come on board with us along the way. It was a great night of stories and songs.

We have a lot of people to thank for the fact that we are still going after a decade of music.

-Mickey Gamble and our Mountain Home family for believing in our band even before we had a name for it.

-Mike Drudge at Class Act Entertainment for helping us get our music across the country, and soon, the world.

-John Holder, our sound engineer, for unparalleled excellence.

-Mandy Tenery, our tour manager, for keeping up with where we are supposed to be!

Most importantly, our wives. Hope, Carla, Anita, Jennifer, and Rachel. Thank you for having the strength to manage everything while we are away. None of these things would have happened without you!

To our kids, we love you all so much! Talking to you is the best part of any trip.

Thank you to all of you that come to hear us, buy our music, and play us on your stations. We hope that it has been worth it for you. It sure has been for us!

God bless,

Balsam Range

We hope you enjoy this fun mini-documentary about the aforementioned evening created by our friend, Becky Seymour with Shmeckie Media.

Today is the day! Mountain Voodoo is out!

We are so proud to bring you our new album, Mountain Voodoo, and it's available TODAY!!

We took a long time picking songs, arranging, and recording the songs. We are proud of the results, and we think you are going to love it. This is the best collection of songs we have ever had. There is a story in every one of them.  We encourage you to get it today! You can get it at balsamrange.com, iTunes, Amazon, all the usual places!

Here is what the press is saying.

The Journal of Roots Music

OCTOBER 18, 2016God, but I love vocal bluegrass. There is something in those harmonies, especially with the high lonesome wail, which brings me to my knees. I am not religious but I could see where one might be converted after hearing great vocal bluegrass groups like Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver or the Seldom Scene. The songs don't have to be religious in nature -- just the music can do it. Even I, heathen that I am, can feel something tugging at my soul when I hear it.

Part of that might have to do with my father, who loved the music as much as I did. When I was a kid, we would watch The Grand Ole Opry, and even before that, we'd listen to it on the radio. We loved all of the music but when they played a vocal bluegrass song it almost made us stop breathing, it was so good. Jimmy Martin, Bill Monroe -- when they came on, all talking stopped.

Dad always said that if there was more music and less talk in church, he might actually go.

I miss those times. I miss my father. I wish he could be here with me so we could listen to Balsam Range's Voodoo Mountain together. He would love it.

The group kicks off the album with a bang. This is pure (what was once called) Newgrass, the kind of stuff on which Tony Rice and Ricky Skaggs based their reputations. It features acoustic guitar (mostly picked), bass, mandolin, fiddle, and banjo -- and voices. The voices are crucial. You can jig and reel and you can breakdown without vocals, but you cannot have the best of what bluegrass offers without great vocals.

Think harmonies sung by angels. Think harmonies stacked to the ceiling. There isn't anything like it, or as some of my friends would say, “There ain't nothin' lak it.”

Oh, it's not all smooth as glass.

“Hello Heartache” is swing straight out of the Bob Wills and Lefty Frizzell songbooks. Rice and Skaggs could have played “Don't Walk Away” during their stint with the Bluegrass Album Band. “Wish You Were Here” could squeeze tears from a stone. “I Hear the Mountains” would easily be a hit for someone the caliber of Vince Gill, which is not to say that these guys do not do it service.

Want a little breakdown? “Chain Gang Blues” more than fills the bill.

All told, Balsam Range serve up 13 songs on this album, every one a beauty.
