Mountain Home congratulated IBMA Entertainer of the Year Balsam Range for their success with Aeonic, the band’s ninth studio album, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Bluegrass Album Chart in January.
In just over a decade, Balsam Range has collected armfuls of industry awards, held multiple months at the top of radio charts, recorded and performed with the Atlanta Pops Orchestra, and headlined an array of eclectic music festivals, all the while maintaining their identity and refining their craft to become one of the most vital artists in the roots genre.
We are excited that our new project, Aeonic, to be released January 4, 2019 by Mountain Home.
We are still grinning ear to ear from THURSDAY NIGHT'S IBMA awards show in Raleigh.
The 2018 Balsam Range Art of Music Festival is shaping up to be an exciting event! Make plans now to join us Thursday, Nov 29 for an evening of fun! We are kicking of the AOM with two different shows to choose from.
We've been busy in the studio this spring when we weren't on the road visiting with y'all, and are ready to share a new song with you! Some of you may have heard it live, we've been playing it out for a few months now.
So excited y'all! We will soon bring our latest project with Atlanta Pops Orchestra Ensemble, “Mountain Overture,” to the stage at MerleFest, one of the country’s premier music festivals, in Wilkesboro, North Carolina.
We are playing a few brand new (to us) festivals, and are tickled to be returning to some of our favorites, too.
We sure are proud of how this project turned out! Special thanks to our label, Mountain Home, as well as the Nashville Recording Orchestra for lending their talents to this record! It is available here on our website for just $10 (holiday shipping guaranteed if ordered by 12/18!)or you can get a digital download
It's a wrap!
We set our sights to outdo the first festival, and by golly, we may have succeeded! Near sell out crowd Friday, and sell out on Saturday! The Stuart Auditorium was packed with almost 2,000 friends. If only for a few hours, everyone came together for the music. From the hilarity of Mike Snider, to the awe inspiring talents of Bryan Sutton, Noam Pikelny, Shawn Lane, Aubrey Haynie and Barry Bales. From the brilliance of Darrell Scott, to the warm holiday collaborative sounds of Balsam Range with The Atlanta Pops Orchestra Ensemble, (to mention a few), the evening concerts transpired into a magical event. On Saturday afternoon, folks were buzzing all over the Terrace Hotel going in and out of workshops, learning from their musical idols, laughing with the boys of Balsam Range, and mingling and jamming together. The weekend was such a great time of fellowship, if you didn't join us this year, consider it for 2018.
Planning for 2018 starts now! Save the date: November 30-December 1
Our first Christmas project, "It's Christmas Time" released today!
We are so excited to bring it to you! For quite a while, we've wanted to bring you something that is different from the normal recordings that we release. We really strived to make a recording that was a real Christmas record.
We are joined on this EP by The Nashville Recording Orchestra, incredible players who play on lots of A-List records. Cody McVey wrote the orchestral parts for us, and he directed the string recording sessions. The result is something that we are very proud of!
We hope you enjoy this special project, and we hope that it can be a part of your holidays for many years to come!
You can get it in the website store, or digitally

On Saturday, March 4 we gathered at the Colonial Theatre in Canton, NC to celebrate our tenth year of playing music together...our bandiversary! What a night it was. We did songs from each of our six albums, what we could remember anyway! It was so gratifying to see so many people in the crowd that have been with us the entire ten years. Family and friends that mean so much to us. Also, new friends that have come on board with us along the way. It was a great night of stories and songs.
We have a lot of people to thank for the fact that we are still going after a decade of music.
-Mickey Gamble and our Mountain Home family for believing in our band even before we had a name for it.
-Mike Drudge at Class Act Entertainment for helping us get our music across the country, and soon, the world.
-John Holder, our sound engineer, for unparalleled excellence.
-Mandy Tenery, our tour manager, for keeping up with where we are supposed to be!
Most importantly, our wives. Hope, Carla, Anita, Jennifer, and Rachel. Thank you for having the strength to manage everything while we are away. None of these things would have happened without you!
To our kids, we love you all so much! Talking to you is the best part of any trip.
Thank you to all of you that come to hear us, buy our music, and play us on your stations. We hope that it has been worth it for you. It sure has been for us!
We hope you enjoy this fun mini-documentary about the aforementioned evening created by our friend, Becky Seymour with Shmeckie Media.
Here are a few images captured by another wonderful friend, Wayne Ebinger!

Here is what the press is saying.
OCTOBER 18, 2016God, but I love vocal bluegrass. There is something in those harmonies, especially with the high lonesome wail, which brings me to my knees. I am not religious but I could see where one might be converted after hearing great vocal bluegrass groups like Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver or the Seldom Scene. The songs don't have to be religious in nature -- just the music can do it. Even I, heathen that I am, can feel something tugging at my soul when I hear it.
Part of that might have to do with my father, who loved the music as much as I did. When I was a kid, we would watch The Grand Ole Opry, and even before that, we'd listen to it on the radio. We loved all of the music but when they played a vocal bluegrass song it almost made us stop breathing, it was so good. Jimmy Martin, Bill Monroe -- when they came on, all talking stopped.
Dad always said that if there was more music and less talk in church, he might actually go.
I miss those times. I miss my father. I wish he could be here with me so we could listen to Balsam Range's Voodoo Mountain together. He would love it.
The group kicks off the album with a bang. This is pure (what was once called) Newgrass, the kind of stuff on which Tony Rice and Ricky Skaggs based their reputations. It features acoustic guitar (mostly picked), bass, mandolin, fiddle, and banjo -- and voices. The voices are crucial. You can jig and reel and you can breakdown without vocals, but you cannot have the best of what bluegrass offers without great vocals.
Think harmonies sung by angels. Think harmonies stacked to the ceiling. There isn't anything like it, or as some of my friends would say, “There ain't nothin' lak it.”
Oh, it's not all smooth as glass.
“Hello Heartache” is swing straight out of the Bob Wills and Lefty Frizzell songbooks. Rice and Skaggs could have played “Don't Walk Away” during their stint with the Bluegrass Album Band. “Wish You Were Here” could squeeze tears from a stone. “I Hear the Mountains” would easily be a hit for someone the caliber of Vince Gill, which is not to say that these guys do not do it service.
Want a little breakdown? “Chain Gang Blues” more than fills the bill.
All told, Balsam Range serve up 13 songs on this album, every one a beauty.
Now this is exciting! A Balsam Range Festival! We have wanted to do this for several years and now it’s becoming a reality. We are blessed to live in one of the prettiest spots in America. Nominated for three International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Awards (Entertainer, Vocal Group, and Vocalist of the Year) for 2016, Balsam Range is offering something that is sure to continue to mesmerize fans of Bluegrass and beyond with their new release Mountain Voodoo, due out November 11 on Mountain Home. Mountain Voodoo is like the book of life “Chapter Six” for Balsam Range; 13-tracks filled with songs of journey, home, sense of place, hardcore stomping drive, and longing. There are fiery instrumental parts alternating with heavy, deep ballads overlaid by the vocal harmonies the group has become known for. www.balsamrange.com
We would like to stop and say an enormous thank you to the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We would be in a totally different world without your courage. God bless you!We will be celebrating Memorial Day in Pickens, South Carolina with a concert at Aunt Sue’s 3rd Annual Bluegrass Festival! Gonna be a great show with Balsam Range, The Band Kelly, and the great Larry Sparks.
Come see us!
We would like to send our condolences to the Stanley family on the passing of one of the founding fathers of our music, the great Ralph Stanley. We have been so blessed to play festivals with him, and to record a few songs with him in years past. He leaves with us the true lonesome sound of Bluegrass. His recordings are a textbook for our genre, but no one could truly emulate what he did. Whether with his brother Carter, or his years with his band after Carter’s death, he made timeless, classic Bluegrass music.
Balsam Range owes a great deal to Ralph Stanley, and we are grateful for the times we had with him.
We would love to have seen the Stanley Brothers reunion tonight!
