Tim Surrett
Tim Surrett was born and raised in Canton, NC. With music being a big part of Tim's life and seeing the power of music as a ministry, Tim climbed on a bus right out of high school and began a musical career that would bless him with many opportunities. Tim has played on several of the most prestigious stages in the music business like the Grand Ole Opry, Carnegie Hall and the Ryman Auditorium. Tim has also had the honor of playing and recording with some of the most talented people in the music industry such as Tony Rice, Adam Steffey, Ralph Stanley, Larry Sparks, Don Rigsby, Vince Gill, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, The Kingsmen Quartet and more. Among these opportunities, Tim has also been honored with many awards such as the Singing News Fan Awards Favorite Musician of the Year.
I'm playing a 1945 Kay Bass. It was given to me by a dear friend in Alabama, Wayne Miller. We had just finished a good day of deer hunting when he took me to his shop. He gave me an old bass, which I didn't really expect to be what this bass has become. I had the bass repaired and set-up by George Chestnut in Nashville. He really did a great job. I'm really excited about the Resonator Guitar (dobro) that I'm playing. A great instrument maker from Ohio, Frank Harlow, built it for me. This is the third one that he has made for me. This model is a jumbo model that I've been playing for a year or so. Frank really builds an amazing instrument. The low end and volume on this dobro is really outstanding. On our recording, I also used a metal-bodied dobro that Frank built with another great instrument maker, Bryan England, from Caneyville, Kentucky. I sometimes tune it with a D-tuning to get a great bluesy sound. I proudly play Frank Harlow Resonators, and I think

I have used GHS strings on all my instruments for the last 15 years. That includes dobro, acoustic guitar, all my basses, even my mandolin (that I don't play in public!). They are always right on with every set of strings that I open.
The guitar that I played on our recording is a 1945 Martin D-18 that belonged to my grandfather, Sherman Surrett. Caleb Smith sometimes plays it on our live programs as well. If you've seen any pictures of it on our website, or maybe at one our shows, you can see where my great uncle Gaye Surrett painted my grandfather's initials S.W. Surrett. It is a truly great guitar. Nothing helps a guitar to sound great like age can. When I got the guitar, which, by the way, I consider to be family owned... not just me, it was almost unplayable. Time had been tough on it. I sent the guitar to Martin. They did a little work to get it into playing shape. The final set-up was done by my friend Randy Hughes in Asheville. He does amazing work on acoustic and electric instruments. Thanks to Randy, it plays like a dream. I'm really proud to play this family treasure, especially since I never met my grandfather. He died in the 1940's. It's especially gratifying to get to hear Caleb play it. He really gets the true potential out of it.
