Legends Coming To Canton NC!! We can’t wait to perform with them!!

Posted on: February 9th, 2012 by Darren Nicholson

I called my buddy Carl who I worked with years ago in Nashville and pulled a favor.  Now 3 of my great friends and musical heroes are coming to Canton. I’ll be sending info out on all 3 but I’ll start with my good friend Carl.  Tickets are nearly gone for this one too.  Get tickets at the Colonial 828-235-2760 or here at www.balsamrange.com

Renown Nashville based songwriters/producers Cordle, Jackson & Salley (also known as Larry Cordle, Carl Jackson, and Jerry Salley) will band together on March 3rd for a VERY rare NC concert with us at the Colonial!!
Songwriters Larry Cordle, Carl Jackson and Jerry Salley have had songs recorded by Garth Brooks, Ricky Skaggs, Patty Loveless, Alison Krauss, Diamond Rio, Gene Watson, Pam Tillis, The Osbourne Brothers, Johnny Paycheck, Reba McEntire, Vince Gill, Mel Tillis, George Jones, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, John Anderson, Glen Campbell, Nancy Sinatra, Dolly Parton, John Michael Montgomery, Travis Tritt, Steven Curtis Chapman and various other artists. Their songs have resulted in sales of over 75 million recordings. Two time Grammy winner Carl Jackson is also a highly respected record producer, whose most recent Grammy was earned for his amazing production of a tribute album to the Louvin Brothers and resulted in the participation of many of Nashville’s greatest music stars.
Concert attendees should plan on a rewarding evening of hardcore honky-tonk, hot-country rockers and bluegrass music!

Multiple Grammy award winner, Carl Jackson, was born in the small town of Louisville, Mississippi on September 18, 1953. By the time he was eight years old, thanks to his father’s influence and a burning desire inside, he was already well on his way to being an accomplished musician.

At age fourteen, after playing backstage at a local concert for Jim and Jesse McReynolds, he was asked to be a Virginia Boy by the bluegrass greats and soon found himself on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. He played banjo for Jim and Jesse for almost five years before joining The Sullivan Family for a short time as a guitarist. Carl then broke away and journeyed to Columbus, Ohio to form a group called “The Country Store” with close friends Jimmy Gaudreau, Bill Rawlins, and the late Keith Whitley. The band in its original form would last little more than a week, for just around the corner lay another big break for the boy from the hills of Mississippi.

Glen Campbell came into town to play the state fair and being huge fans of his, Carl and Keith went out to see the show. Afterwards they ran into Glen’s banjo player, Larry McNeely, who persuaded Carl to come by the next day for a jam session. After picking for a while, Larry suddenly told Carl he had been looking for someone to take his place with Glen because he was tired of traveling and that Carl was the man. Larry took him to meet and play for Campbell and Glen hired him on the spot. For the next twelve years, Glen featured Carl everywhere he went as “the greatest banjo player in the world”.

During his years with Glen, Carl started to concentrate on his vocal and songwriting abilities as well as his musicianship. He recorded two albums for Capitol Records, (“Carl Jackson: Banjo Player” and “Old Friends“), three for Sugar Hill, (“Banjo Man: A Tribute To Earl Scruggs“, “Song Of The South“, and “Banjo Hits“), and then in 1984 his signing with Columbia Records produced a couple of top forty country songs, (“She’s Gone, Gone, Gone” and “Dixie Train“).

It was at this time that Carl made the decision to leave Glen Campbell and strike out on his own. It has turned out to be a very wise one. As a vocalist, you can hear him on recordings with the likes of EmmyLou Harris, Dwight Yoakam, Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, Steve Wariner, Garth Brooks, Janie Fricke, Dolly Parton, Sweethearts Of The Rodeo, Marsha Thornton, John Anderson, Mac Davis, Pam Tillis, Radney Foster, Joe Diffie, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Holly Dunn, Glen Campbell, Lorrie Morgan, Martina McBride, Marty Stuart, Ken Mellons, Tammy Wynette, Hank Williams Jr., Rodney Crowell, Mike Reid, James Bonemy, Mindy McReady, Linda Ronstadt, Keith Whitley, George Jones, Rhonda Vincent, Patty Loveless, Ricky Van Shelton, Shawn King, Ashley Monroe, Alecia Nugent, Mark Newton, Bradley Walker, Travis Tritt, Merle Haggard, Jon Randall, Blake Shelton, Brad Paisley, Joey + Rory or Roger Miller just to name a few; or you may hear a Jackson song recorded by such artists as Glen Campbell (“Letter to Home“), Wild Rose (“Breaking New Ground“), Pam Tillis (“Put Yourself In My Place“), Garth Brooks (“Against The Grain” & “Fit For A King“), Trisha Yearwood (“Lonesome Dove“),  Diamond Rio (“Close To The Edge“), Patty Loveless (“You Don’t Know How Lucky You Are“), Steve Wariner (“The Same Mistake Again“), Vince Gill (“Real Lady’s Man“), Daron Norwood (“My Girl Friday“), Rhonda Vincent (“I’m Not Over You“), Mike Snider, The Seldom Scene, Charly McLain, Nancy Sinatra, The Chuck Wagon Gang, Bobbie Cryner, The Lewis Family, Keith Stegall, Tony Rice, Red Steagal, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Ricky Skaggs, The Whites, lllrd Tyme Out, The Rarely Herd, Alecia Nugent, Continental Divide, The McCarters, The Country Gentlemen, Mark Newton, Johnny Paycheck, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Mel Tillis, Bradley Walker, Jim & Jesse, Larry Cordle & Lonesome Standard Time, Jon Randall, Ricky Lynn Gregg, Mountain Heart, Terri Clark, The Oak Ridge Boys, Brad Paisley, Marty Raybon, Joe Diffie or The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Carl’s work can even be heard at baseball and football games as he has penned theme songs and jingles for the California Angels (“California 9 to 5“), (“Dreams“) and (“Something To Shout About“) and the Ole Miss Rebels (“ ‘Neath The Oaks In The Grove“).

Jackson’s “Little Mountain Church House” was voted the 1990 International Bluegrass Music Association song of the year and a more recent version by George Hamilton IV was a 2005 Dove Award nominee for bluegrass song of the year.  On February 25th, 1992, for his album with John Starling entitled “Spring Training”, Carl was awarded his first Grammy. A few months later he received a Dove Award for southern gospel song of the year, “Where Shadows Never Fall“, recorded by Glen Campbell. The beautiful ballad, “No Future In The Past“, by male vocalist of the year Vince Gill was a huge songwriting success for Carl and was named the #1 Country Song of the Year for 1993 by Radio & Records magazine. In 1998, after hearing Carl’s demo,  Garth Brooks decided to include the Jackson spiritual entitled “Fit For A King” in his “Sevens” project.  All in all, Carl has had hundreds of his songs recorded, with sales in excess of forty million units.  A poll conducted by Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine several years ago found Carl to have written eight of the top 200 bluegrass songs of all time.

Carl has also had a hand in the production of several great artists such as Ruby Lovett, Slickerbilly, Mike Ward, Real Surreal, Carly Goodwin, Bering Strait, Jim & Jesse and Bobbie Cryner, whose first effort on Sony Records received the honor of Best Country Album of 1993 in USA Today. He is currently producing new artists, Shawn King, Jennifer Wayne, Bradley Walker (2007 IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year) and Alecia Nugent, as well as hot new country sweethearts, Joey + Rory.

For some hot guitar pickin’, listen to Carl along with Steve Wariner, Mark O’Conner and Jimmy Olander sizzle on “Hap Towne Breakdowne“, included on Steve’s instrumental album, “No More Mr. Nice Guy”.

Carl has two great writer’s CD’s along with pals, Larry Cordle & Jerry Salley, entitled “Against The Grain” and “Lonesome Cafe”. He is also the producer of the critically acclaimed tribute to the late Gram Parsons called “The Gram Parsons Notebook”, available on Shell Point Records.

One of Carl’s finest production successes is entitled “Livin’, Lovin’, Losin’ – Songs Of The Louvin Brothers” and was the 2003 Grammy winner for Country Album of the Year.   “How’s The World Treating You”, an incredible duet from the album, featuring James Taylor and Alison Krauss also won the Grammy for vocal collaboration of the year.  The CD was released in September 2003 and contains other performances by EmmyLou Harris & Rodney Crowell, Patty Loveless & Jon Randal, Dolly Parton & Sonya Isaacs, Joe Nichols & Rhonda Vincent, Glen Campbell & Leslie Satcher, Johnny Cash & Pam Tillis, Vince Gill & Terri Clark, Ronnie Dunn & Rebecca Lynn Howard, Harley Allen & Dierks Bentley, Marty Stuart & Del McCoury, Kathy Louvin & Pamela Brown Hayes, as well as three performances by Carl himself; one with songwriting pals, Larry Cordle & Jerry Salley, one with country legend, Merle Haggard, and one with the incredible Linda Ronstadt.

Speaking of Merle Haggard, Carl played guitar, as well as sang and produced all the harmony vocals on Hag’s release, “The Bluegrass Sessions“, except on one song.   Alison Krauss joins Carl and lends her angelic voice to “Mama’s Hungry Eyes”.

Carl lends his talents to the brand new Brad Paisley project, singing harmony on the title track, “This Is Country Music”, as well as “A Man Don’t Have To Die”, along with the awesome, Sonya Isaacs.  He is also featured, along with Marty Stuart and Sheryl Crow, on the bluegrass gospel classic, “Life’s Railway To Heaven”, not only singing some high lonesome tenor, but also soloing on five string banjo.

In October of 2011, another stellar project produced by Jackson was released to the public and is currently getting rave reviews across the country.  “Mark Twain: Words & Music” tells the life story of the great Samuel Clemens and contains magical musical performances by Emmylou Harris, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Rhonda Vincent, Bradley Walker, The Church Sisters, Sheryl Crow, Brad Paisley, Marty Raybon, Val Storey, Vince Gill, Joe Diffie and Ricky Skaggs, as well as narration by Garrison Keillor, along with Jimmy Buffet, as the voice of Huck Finn, and non-other than Mr. Clint Eastwood, as the legendary Mark Twain.  Carl even performs a song himself, entitled “Safe Water”, co-written with dear friend, Jerry Salley.

On December 26th, 2011 the state of Mississippi honored Carl with an official Country Music Trail Marker in his hometown of Louisville.  The beautiful marker, which highlights Jackson’s career, stands within a stone’s throw of the historic Strand Theatre.  Carl performs his annual “Home For Christmas” concert every December in the very building where he used to see movies as a kid, not to mention being born on the third floor, which housed a clinic back in 1953.

Since those days in Mississippi fifty some odd years ago, two-time SPBGMA songwriter of the year, Carl Jackson, has realized many of his dreams. But with each dream that becomes a reality, a new dream lies ahead………..

Balsam Range is getting ready to head back into the studio for a new recording!

Posted on: December 28th, 2011 by Darren Nicholson

Well …hope you’ve all had amazing holidays.  Now that Christmas is behind us…Balsam Range is going back into the studio soon. We’ve been collecting songs for the 4th BR record together and possible talks of collaborating with our pal John Driskell Hopkins of the Zac Brown Band in recent months for a project for him. Both thoughts are very exciting to me.

Anyway …we’ll be recording soon!  It’s been such a whirlwind, busy year …that tonight was the first time I played through some songs that I’m really interested in and got excited about getting down to business after the holidays. The way it’s been in the past was a collaborative process in which everyone in BR brought something to the table.  We’ll start doing rough demos tmrw night and we’ll see where we are song/material wise in the next few weeks.

I don’t want to rush it and have mediocre songs and mediocre recording. Some bands do a project every year.  And then some bands like Alison Krauss + Union Station or folks Carl Jackson do a GREAT album every three years.  I will not throw my hat in that circle of legendary artists…but please forgive me for wanting to take my time so it can be as good as it can be.  I feel I have found some really good songs to bring to the band in the next months.  About 8 that are very good from some of my great songwriting friends. So in a month if we can have 40 good ones and pick the best 12 of those … then we stand to have an interesting album.  I want to keep raising the bar for myself.  And nope …not raising myself up to the bar. haha

We’re looking forward to what the new year brings. Keep on the lookout for updates about recording. And please feel free to give us your input on what you’d like to hear.

Now here is some recording inspiration for me….

Upcoming Shows:

12/31/11 – Thad Woods Auction House

1/7/12 - Deep River Rising (Bryan Sutton, David Holt, & T. Michael Coleman) with BR at The Colonial Theatre in Canton NC.

1/28/12 – The Altamont Theatre in Asheville NC.

2/4/12 – The Harris Brothers with BR at The Colonial Theatre in Canton NC.

We started out by issuing a “donation match challenge” to folks in our area.  BR and John each donated to this charity and challenged others to do so.  It’s been wonderful!!  THANKS to all who’ve participated in the challenge and those who’ve bought individual tickets as well!!

We still have a limited number of $25 individual tickets. They are now on sale for the December 3rd show in Canton NC! Proceeds go to Meals on Wheels when you purchase tickets.  You can purchase tickets here on the top right hand of our homepage or at the Colonial Theatre ( 828-235-2760).  Again this is rare treat to have John at home, it’s a great cause, and we have a limited number of tickets left.  So get them now.

Bluegrass Music has various organizations and associations based all over the U.S. and around the world.  The one we’re performing this weekend is part of many festivals the Midwest Bluegrass Assoc. puts on each year.  They have been so good to Balsam Range and the fans have been so nice. We really look forward to being a part of their events every year. Thanks to all those who supports Bluegrass, Americana, and Roots music!

We’re so excited to have Audie Blaylock coming to WNC. It says a lot when you’re excited to see your in-laws.

Posted on: October 28th, 2011 by Darren Nicholson

    hahaha

Audie is a Grammy Nominee and a once in a lifetime musician and singer.  I married his cousin and he has still not forgiven me. :)

He’s bringing his great band to NC for a special night of music. Bluegrass at the Rock w/ Balsam Range and Audie Blaylock & Redline.  Saturday, November 5th, at The Old Rock School in Valdese NC – 7pm. You can hear a live interview on the radio, 88.7,  the same day.  WNCW.org. Audie Blaylock and Redline – \”Matches\

I met Audie many years ago after he’d left Rhonda Vincent and the Rage.  He started his own fire-breathing, traditional bluegrass band.  I traveled all over the U.S. and Australia doing shows with them.  All were fun, but the first will always be the most memorable. It was in Imlay City MI at the high school where his cousin, Jennifer, was teaching.  We met that weekend and soon after had opportunities to spend  a lot more time around each other.  Not long after that, she and I started dating long distance.  That was in 2006.  We’ve now been married 3 years and I brought her to the promised land, Canton North Carolina. She is now the vocal music director and teaching at Asheville High School.  I could not be more proud of her. And I could not be more happy in my life. Glad things work out the way they do.  I don’t know if Audie would agree, since her parents quit speaking to him.  hahaha

This is some insight on why 11/5/11 at the Old Rock School will be fun and sort of coming full circle.

    Also look for:

Balsam Range in Roxboro NC this Saturday 10/29 with Mountain Faith at the Kirby Theatre.

Steve Sutton and myself in Hazelwood this Tuesday 11/1 at Smoky Mtn Roasters coffee house.  With proceeds going to local Charity.

Balsam Range has Country Hit maker John Wiggins coming home to help Meals on Wheels!

Posted on: October 19th, 2011 by Darren Nicholson

We are so excited to announce that hometown favorite, John Wiggins will be performing at The Colonial Theatre on Saturday, December 3rd at 7:30pm to kick off the Balsam Range Winter Concert Series with a bang. John, an acoustic guitar, and Balsam Range.  Only 300 seats and knowing John will doing all his #1 Country hits…the seats are going fast! And all to help Meals on Wheels of Haywood County.

We have comprised a list of unique acts for this series. They are all musical legends and heroes of ours. John is no exception and to partner it in such in way is very special to us.

We approached John about doing the series and asked what he would charge? He simply said “I’ll do it, but you take my part and give it to a charity at home.” And we said “If that’s how you’re going to be then we’ll match your generosity”.  Now John and I are asking the same of you.

We are asking our neighbors for help. Please help us raise money for a great local cause by participating in our challenge.  Currently, tickets are available through a “Donation Challenge” that we, the artists, have requested. We have started the process by each making a tier donation of $500 ($1000 total) and we challenge all of our residential, organizational, and/or business friends throughout Haywood County to donate something.   We’ve already raised over $4000 dollars as of today (10/18/11).  Please participate and be recognized with your peers for contributing to a great cause and need in our home county.

    Please know if you donate:

    Your contribution is tax deductable

You can get free concert tickets and meet-n-greet with John

You can get recognition and advertisements for your business or orgnanization

You can get free signed cd’s

You can get recognized on our websites and local media

You can get special recognition at the concert

    And lots more….

The concert is to celebrate those who donated and matched our challenge.  It will be an amazing night of music with John for sure. Thanks for your time and consideration in our endeavor.

You can contact Jeanne with your donation, more info, tier levels, and/or  if you have any questions.  Her email is JNaber@haywoodnc.net.

Who is John Wiggins?   If you don’t know….

John Wiggins a Haywood County NC super talent and Country Music Star.

An amazing singer/guitar player signed a major deal with Mercury Records in the 1990′s with sister Audrey. Now John is making a name for himself and solidifying his place in Country Music history as a hit songwriter  for today’s biggest names. A rare WNC appearance from John is a huge deal.  This guy is a MAJOR force in commercial Country Music. We’re proud to know John is on his way to the Country Music Hall of Fame and he’s from Haywood County.  John is like a Warren Haynes or Steve Martin caliber of celebrity for our region. But he’s kind of slipped through the cracks for some because of his many years spent in Nashville. I mean MILLIONS of records sold because of John’s songs. We are so proud to get him back to Canton and all he wanted was for a local charity to benefit.  We are so happy to be a part of something like this.

We just feel this is exciting for WNC, a GREAT cause gets some much needed help, and we feel it’s a story of major interest because of who John is.  People around here seem to love popular country music like 99.9 Kiss Country where John’s songs can be heard a few dozen times a day.

We (Balsam Range) participate in about 60+ fundraisers annually for different organizations all over WNC. And we’re glad to do so. But we have also wanted to do an event of our own since the band started. John, Balsam Range, and I really wanted to start something that could grow as big for Haywood County as some of these other events in our area. John is in a great spot to help see this come to light. This community has been so supportive of us and we have a huge desire to help people in need.  We are very excited about the idea of what this could do for local charities in the future if we can get some momentum behind our concept of an annual event. We’d love to see a huge yearly gathering with some huge stars eventually coming to Haywood County to help our community. Please …YOU can help make this happen. We’re aware that a great need exists at home. In this case, we’ve all had Meal on Wheels impact our lives somehow…friends, family members getting services. And it’s always been in a positive way. For some folks, the interaction during a delivery means more than the meal. It makes me feel good that people like John recognize that. He’s a great guy.

Needless to say we are stoked about this concert.  And we’re proud to call John friend.  We’re excited about a rare and special night of music. Feel free to pass this email along to anyone who might be interested. And place this information on your calendar and web-pages and let’s try to help some folks in need. It would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Darren Nicholson

“Trains I Missed” won 2011 IBMA Song of the Year! Wow!!

Hello e-friends!!! Wow…we can’t believe it!!  What huge honor.  We sure appreciate ALL the great comments.  We always try to respond to everyone but it may take us a while.  THANK YOU.  Thanks for all the kind words and support you given this band and our music.  Thanks for believing in us and this incredible song.  We sure did from the first time we heard it.   We feel privileged and so lucky to have snagged such a great song.  THANKS to the songwriters.  We we’re so happy that two of them (Nicole & Walt) were there with us thursday to share in the celebratiuon.

And a clebration it was.  IBMA is a great organization and they throw one amazing event.  Again we are honored to have received “Song of the Year 2011″ for Trains I Missed.  It was extra special beacuse it was at the Ryman.  I always love playing there.  And Hollywood legend Steve Martin was the man who announced our award and presented it to us.  I just wish we could have all been dressed like The Three Amigos. Oh well.

Also we want to give a special shoutt-out to our record label, Mountain Home.  They racked up a bucket full of awards.  Congrats to our label mates Doyle Lawson and the Boxcars for wins as well.

And if you’re from the Carolina Mountains then take pride in our rich mountain culture.  WNC was also well represented by our friends Bryan Sutton, SCR.  Of course we were there but it’s hit or miss who claims us. hahahaha  I know for me personally, I couldn’t ever figure out if my mom was proud of me or not. Because out of all the pictures of me in the family albums …she just kept the negatives.

See more photos and info at Bluegrass Today online.

Again… THANK YOU ALL …thanks to all who voted and all who support Balsam Range. We love you!

Join us this week or listen online! IBMA Awards Show, FanFest, and more of the road!

Whew!! We have been booking it this summer. We’ve been so busy. We’re grateful and appreciate all the cool things we’ve been fortunate to be a part of. That’s what happens when you surround yourself with good friends like you. Thank YOU.

Words cannot describe the great time we had with super-talent John Driskell Hopkins (Zac Brown Band) this past Friday. Great, fun show and we’re lucky he heard us on the radio all those years ago…because we can all say now “He is my friend!” He is truly a great guy. And he’s shown much interest in bringing that same show to WNC. Also great catching up with JD Crowe in Lexington and the gorgeous Grandfather Mountain experience on Sunday. We played with our pal JD and University of Kentucky for a great ECO fundraiser… He and his band are also a top shelf guys.

Well this week is a big one for us and we want YOU to join us. If you can’t be at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville TN this Thursday you can listen online, or via radio. 7:30pm Central. It will be broadcast live on Satellite Radio (Bluegrass Junction), AM Radio (650 WSM ), and on the web at www.wsmonline.com. And more show info at www.ibma.org. So you have no excuse to not join in on all the fun. J

We’ve been asked to perform Trains I Missed on the IBMA Awards show along side the likes of Alison Krauss, Sam Bush, Steve Martin and many more legendary performers. What an honor. That song is up for IBMA Song of the Year. The album is up for Album of the Year. And the band is nominated for Emerging Artist of the Year. To be nominated by your peers for three awards is truly humbling and a huge honor for a bunch of WNC boys whose only prior talents basically included collecting firewood. Even though I’ve always dreamed of moving to Pakistan or India and becoming a cab driver.

Also wanted to give a shout-out and congratulate our record label, Mountain Home. They have several artists nominated this year at IBMA. These include our label mates: Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Darin & Brooke Aldridge, and the Boxcars. Congrats guys and gals!!

We play FanFest Friday afternoon at 1:55pm. Check out the lineup. 40 top acts including Alison Krauss. More info at www.ibma.org.

Last but not least …we can’t wait for you to see our tuxedos we’ve rented for the awards show!!!! Thanks to Larry at Men’s Warehouse in Asheville NC. He’s a miracle worker…who else could find 4 hot pink tuxedos with those cake-frosting shirts? Thanks Larry. And I say four because Caleb has to be different. He has a bright, electric blue suit with a LOOOONG coat. Looks like MC Hammer circa 1990. hahahahaha Kidding aside…we did get new suits but they’re gray. Not kidding that Caleb owns that blue suit I just described. J

If you’ve never been to IBMA then you must experience it sometime. AMAZING is about all I can say. Please learn more or become a voting member at www.ibma.org.

Hope you tune in Thursday night! Whether we win or not …we’re truly honored to be nominated.

And if you’re in NC this Saturday come to a live show!! Join us this Saturday, October 1st, in Pineville NC. We’re playing the Harrison Methodist Church Fall Festival. We play at 7pm. Bring the family and come on for all the festivities and fun!!!
